Every day that passed, I anxiously waited for word from Soren, but it never came.

I hadn’t received any letters or messengers, and of course none of the staff would tell me if they’d heard rumors of war in the other territories. Whenever I asked Syrena about it, she waved the comment away and said her brother knew more about such things than she did. So after weeks of maddening silence, I decided to swallow my pride and speak to the prince.

When I made my way to the end of the hall and stopped in front of a pair of opulent double doors, I grit my teeth, promised myself that no matter what happened I wouldn’t punch the man in the throat, and knocked. A few moments later the door opened, revealing Kaspar wearing nothing but a haphazardly draped gold robe. Behind him, a pretty young servant I recognized from the kitchen yanked down her skirts.

“King Slayer.” The prince smirked. “What can I do for you?”

I attempted to hide my disgust and willed my eyes not to drift lower on the prince’s body. The man was horrible, but some twisted, feminine part of my brain was curious to see just how far those rippling muscles went down.

“If you’re busy, I can come back,” I said curtly.

“Or you could join.” Kaspar adopted a devilish smile.

My eyes narrowed, and I sniffed the air between us. The sharp scent of liquor wafted up from his skin and stung my nostrils. “Are you drunk?”

The smile disappeared from Kaspar’s face. When he spoke again, his voice had hardened. “I said what can I do for you, King Slayer?”

Don’t punch him in the throat, don’t punch him in the throat, don’t punch him in the throat…

“Have you heard anything about Soren?”

Kaspar sniffed and crossed his arms, then leaned a hip against the doorway. “No.”

I stared at him, expecting him to expand on the comment, but he just glared back at me.

“That’s it?” I asked flatly. “That’s all I get? Just no?”

The prince shrugged carelessly.

Do not punch him.

“Kaspar, please,” I said, fighting to keep my words calm, “these are my friends. I’m worried about them. Imagine if Hale was away at war and no one would tell you anything. I just want to know if they’re alive, that’s all.”

Kaspar remained silent for a few moments longer before letting out an irritated grunt. “Fine. Last I heard, there have been minor skirmishes here and there, but your precious king and his low-born pet have come out from each battle victorious.”

I breathed a heavy sigh of relief. “Oh, thank the gods. So, what now?”

“What do you mean, what now?”

“We can’t just keep sitting around and waiting to see who wins, can we?”

“We can, and we will.”

“Why not send any of your own troops to help them?”

Kaspar shrugged again. “Why would I? Soren isn’t my ally, so why should I risk the lives of my people for his sake?”

My blood was starting to heat again.

Do. Not. Punch. Him.

“If you’re so worried
